Overview

Cosmic ray and solar energetic particles are attenuated by the shielding effect of the Earth's magnetic field. Geomagnetic shielding is calculated for quiet or disturbed conditions of the magnetosphere, or can be ignored altogether, for instance to simulate interplanetary conditions. This implementation of the geomagnetic shielding runs in combination with the coordinate grid generator. SPENVIS verifies if a coordinate grid has been generated prior to accessing the model page. If not, an error message is displayed with a link to the coordinate grid generator.

The input parameters and options for the models are described below. When the input form has been completed, pressing the button will start the calculation and bring up the "Results" page.

Model parameters

The geomagnetic shielding can be evaluated over the following domains:
  1. one single geographical point, with one of the model parameters as an independent variable;
  2. a one-dimensional range of geographical points;
  3. a two-dimensional map in latitude and longitude, at fixed altitude and universal or local time.

First, the user can specify the IGRF epoch. The next input is the particle type: . The user has also the possibility to provide the energy of the particle in units of [MeV/nucleon] and its charge state Note that the charge state options are adapted according to the particle type selection.

Finally, for the geomagnetic shielding the user can select between a quiet and a stormy magnetosphere.

When a single geographical point grid is used, the IGRF epoch becomes a variable parameter. Then, the user must provide in addition the last value for IGRF epoch and specify the step or the number of IGRF epoch values.

Results

The geomagnetic shielding computation produces the files listed in the table below. A description of the file formats can be brought up by clicking on their description in the table.

The report file spenvis_cop.html contains the input parameters. The spenvis_coo.txt file contains the transmission factor for each grid point.

Output files generated by the geomagnetic shielding model

To generate plots, select the plot type(s), options and graphics format, and click the or button. The current page will be updated with the newly generated plot files.
