Coordinate transformations

This tool is intended as a visual aid to interpret the relationships between the various coordinate systems used in space physics.

The input parameters and options for the tool are described below. When the input form has been completed, pressing the button will start the calculation and bring up the "Results" page.

Model parameters

Input coordinate system

The tool transforms the coordinates of a point in space into coordinates in a number of often used coordinate systems. The point in space is defined by selecting a coordinate system and entering the coordinates in that system. Coordinates can be specified in three reference systems:

Date

A date and time are needed for the time dependent coordinate transformations. For the calculation of the magnetic coordinates, the UNIRAD library is used with DGRF/IGRF as internal magnetic field for the specified date, and no external field.

Results

The coordinate transformation tool produces the files listed in the table below. A description of the file formats can be brought up by clicking on their description in the table.

The report file spenvis_ctp.html contains the input parameters and summary tables.

The output file spenvis_cto.txt contains the coordinates of the given location in the different coordinate systems and the axes of the coordinate systems in GEO coordinates.

Output files generated by the coordinate transformation tool
File name Description
spenvis_ctp.html Report file
spenvis_cto.txt Coordinates of the location in the different coordinate systems

To generate plots, select the plot type(s), options and graphics format, and click the button. The current page will be updated with the newly generated plot files.
